How did you deal with your toddler waking up at night when new baby was crying?

baby crying
mamakatie asked:

I have a 18 month old and a newborn. The newborn is sleeping in our room right now, but will soon be sleeping in her room which is right next to my 18 month old. I am worried that when she wakes up and cries when she wants to eat at night, my 18 month old will wake up too, he is a pretty light sleeper. If he does, what do you think is the best way to deal with it. My 18 month old is very empathetic and is always wanting to make sure that his little sister is okay.

I always kept my kids in our room until they were conistently sleeping through the night just for that reason. Some of my kids would of slept right through it, but I didn’t want to chance having more kids awake then needed :)

Ours slept in a pack in play when they got to big for the bassinet. All of them except our youngest were sleeping through the night by 4 months old, so they weren’t in our room too long.

When you put them in the same room, whenver you decide to, and your 18 month old is woken up by your baby then put on a movie for the 18 month old in the living room, and feed the baby out there with him. He’ll fall asleep in no time with a distraction, then move them back. If this doesnt work then try putting a pack and play in the living room for the newborn until she sleeps through the night, or you can keep her in your room until then. Good luck

i had a fan going in my older son’s room…even in the winter b/c he insisted (he sweats a lot and would even sleep with only underwear on, with his blanket off, with the fan on full blast in the middle of winter)
