Why Baby Cry

why does a baby cry the moment he is born?

why babies cry
Helleny asked:

as everyone knows, after the nine months of pregnancy are over, and when it’s time to deliver the baby, the first thing that the baby does when he is born is crying,as soon as he is removed from his mother’s stomach he starts screaming and if not, this means that the baby is not ok !!So why do you think that the baby cries…not for the reason to assure that he’s ok,but why?Is there anything that happens to him and makes him scream?

The world is an evil place (mostly because of religion).. which makes baby’s cry.

  2. mama says:

I think it’s because of the shock of getting air into their lungs for the first time. Birth alone is very traumatic for a baby.

  3. missourim43 says:

The liberal Democrats would blame George Bush for this too!

  4. tampico135s says:

it is the sudden shock of entering a noisy, bright room and not being “craddled” in comfort. besides it was quite the struggle to be born in the first place. it’s hard work and it’s exhausting. there’s also the hormone factor raging as well.

  5. Ethan says:

In the mother’s womb, he was immersed in water like a fish. When he suddenly emerges into our world, his skin gets in touch with the air for the first time and he has to begin breathing with his lungs. Therefore, it hurts and is very uncomfortable all over; that’s why he cries. As he cries, he has to use his lungs, and then he will get used to our world. He now understands that there is no more water, that it has been replaced by air. He will get used to it slowly.

  6. bzzzz says:

because he is in a comfy cozy womb up until now and all the sudden he has people all over the place, bright lights, and thats his only way to communicate that he’s scared, shocked, cold and doesnt know what the hell is going on.

  7. fabee says:

because there’s air (oxygen) first coming into their lungs and it’s somehow painful for them.

  8. Dirty_Idea says:

Instinct. It let’s you know who’s boss right from the start. You can imagine that after all that pain, an animal might not be concentrating on its newborn. The crying just ensures mum’s attention is focused where it’s needed…

HES JUST BEEN BORN!!!!! its scary for him theres bright lights and lots of things happening he is scared

  11. Island Girl says:

Becuase the baby’s lungs start working, they are strarting to breath in a different enviroment from the placenta. If they dont cry the minute their born it means they are breathing.

  12. jennanderton2006 says:

they cry because thats the easiest way to get in that first breath. my son didnt cry at birth, but hes fine. its all about the first breaths this insures that they do start breathing. just my opinion. icould be wrong

  13. ThatLady says:

    1. They have just been rejected from the womb. This is their first sense of rejection.
    2. The air feels so much colder than in the womb.
    3. They have to suck in air into their lungs. They were collapsed in the womb, and they have to force them open.
    4. They are learning to breathe for the first time ever.

Conclusion: The birth process is not just hard on the mom, but on the baby too. Get used to it little buddy. That’s life on this planet.

  14. amosunknown says:

what happens to him? Hello! He’s just been swuished out a hole thats two sizes too small to fit out of. A lot of babies have broken bones from the force of being born, their sculls have a ‘soft spot’ because they have to be able to contract to fit through the birth canal and pelvis.

Not to mention the sensory shock of light, noise, touch, cold…. The pain of needing to breathe for the first time in its life… feelings of hunger and pain…

birth isnt just traumatic for the mother.

  15. kj says:

He’s been a happy little camper in there for the last nine months. He’s comfortable. Suddenly he’s thrust out into the cold cruel world where somebody smacks his butt (to get him breathing)…..of course he would cry. However, the trauma is soon forgotten.

  16. Grace says:

The release of pressure from the birth canal forces any remaining amniotic fluid out and air in. I imagine that it would be painful. Also, crying at the moment of birth imprints his cry into the mother, ensuring that she will be able to find him whenever he cries.

  17. AntoineBachmann says:

he or she needs to BREATHE! In the womb the baby does not breathe, so it comes out and bang!, his or her lungs have to start working at once.

Now why do babies cry, instead of just breathing normally? Probably because the experience is not that much fun, and because they have no speech to express it (remember, babies don’t ask to be fed, they cry, babies don’t ask for a change of diaper, they cry, babies don’t ask for hugs, they cry, etc.)

    hope this helps

  18. Brittany M says:

if you went from 98 F to 73 F and could not talk to say gee its cold in here you would cry too.

  19. ZsMom says:

The baby was warm and comfortable and safe and then BAM! Bright lights, noises he has only heard as muffled murmurs are now LOUD and CLOSE, he isn’t wrapped in a warm surrounding like he was before. Some strange person is touching him, “WHERE IS MY MOM!?!”

It can all be very overwhelming. Just because a baby doesn’t cry when it is born doesn’t mean that the baby isn’t ok. My baby didn’t cry. She was very calm. She only cried when they put her on the scale to weigh her because it was so cold. She scored a 10/10 on the APGAR which is very rare. :)

  20. Beez says:

Because he is squeezed out of his dark, warm and safe world into a room full of people in white, bright lights hurting his eyes and cool air surrounding him.

  21. sunshine girl says:

because everthing outside of the woob is very strange and can upset a baby and that is what babys do they cry and will keep crying till they are grown and then they will still find stuff to cry about

  22. Lisa says:

these are very interesting answers! i agree with the people above me…it’s a new place that the baby is not used to. it’s like a whole complete different world for the baby. they cant talk yet to express how they feel so they begin to cry. they need to learn how to breathe and most likely it hurts the first time.

  23. Dhinakar R says:

He is not crying actually, he is starting to breath air, as when he is womb, he is breathing through his umbilical cord (Membranous duct connecting the foetus with the placenta) as soon he/she come out of the womb the body starts to breath air. Do you one thing there won’t be any tears from a baby whose is just born. If the baby is not crying and then something is very very bad.

  24. Brandi D says:

1)he has never seen light before 2)he has been in water for 9 months never felt dry before 3)never felt hands b4 4)never heard voice and noise b4 (not like that anyways) So if you had 4 never things happen in all of 1 sec wouldnt you be scared and cry?

  25. Kimberly A says:

its colder out side your body…the baby has had a really comfortalbe living place for 9 months and all of a sudden “cold” air smacks it in the face…..so they cry

  26. chowderboxallnite says:

um, wouldn’t you cry if you were pushed out of a nice warm place into a noisy, cold room where people are touching you for the first time EVER in your life?

Plus that is the only noise they can make,

  27. star says:

Well babies actually cry in the womb also.. as they are getting closer to delivery. But the most common sense reason would be that they were very cuddled in the womb and you ripped them out a whole new environment.. Why don’t you ask yourself the same question you were a baby once right?

  28. marvin says:

    Several reasons:
The real world is Cold, The baby is used to the 98 degrees inside Mommy.

It’s very bright outside of Mommy, usually pretty dark inside.

No longer nice and cuddly inside Mommy, now stretched out and upside down getting thrown all over the place and getting probed and checked out. Probably pretty scary.

If baby is not crying, usually means it’s not breathing yet. This is the reason for the first spank on the hiney. The main reason for the crying is to make the lungs work for the very first time. Also helps expel any fluid or mucus the baby might have in the mouth and throat. All of this is a good sign and totally normal.

If the baby does not cry automatically, the nurses and Doctor there can usually handle it and the baby will be fine.

  29. I DON'T HUG TREES says:

Has to suck air in his lungs.

People are pushing and pulling you – and to top it off – you are naked.

    Wouldn’t you cry too?

  30. jess l says:

think about it…nine months in the comfort of enclosed space, warmth, good tasting fluid, no need to breathe, no need to shiver, nice and dark in there, the hum of mothers voice, the music of her heart beating and her intestines singing…….then the stress of being pushed through a hole, head squeezed, neck bent, your precious womb is squeezing together (contractions) and forcing you out. Just when you are completely stressed out and annoyed, your eyes are shocked by this bright light, someone sucks that yummy fluid out of your mouth, and you are freezing cold! You are no longer in nice warm fluid and the air is so cold and dry! That would make anyone cry….no pain, no memory, no worry. Once that baby gets her lips wrapped around mommies warm nipple and gets a taste of that sweet warm milk and can hear the farmiliar sound of the heartbeat and feels the touch of mommy for the first time, she will forget everything in the past and fall fast asleep wrapped up tightly in her mommies arms.

  31. paprklp says:

That first breath is the very most important. When the baby cries the chambers within the heart that were open then close. This is vital to his living. Making them cry thru the light tapping on his bottom will force him to take that first breath and the umbilical chord can be cut.

  33. Jessica says:

My son didn’t cry when he was born. In fact, he didn’t even whimper until 3 days old….but he came out blue (his umbilical cord was around his neck)

  35. melsamjer says:

A lot is the shock of coming from a warm cramped place and breathing fluid to cold, exposed area breathing air.

  36. ChemGeek says:

they are cold, scared and probably in pain from having their head shoved through the hole a size of a lemon.

  37. dr's mom says:

It is their way of clearing out there lungs. That is how they get all the amniotic fluid out.

  38. *Shelly* says:

Sounds like everyone gave you some great answers so I won’t repeat everything, I would like to mention however, that my son did not cry when he was born and he was perfectly fine. I was very scared at first because everyone tells you that if they aren’t crying something is very wrong. Well, that is not always the case. My doctor said, sometimes they just don’t cry. I think he was shocked more than anything and by the time they were finished poking and proding w/all the typical newborn procedures, he was safe and warm and suckling milk. They wanted to make sure his lungs were ok so they did some standard tests and sure enough, he was just fine. The funny thing is, my son is now almost 2 and when something startles him, he makes a sad face and pokes out his bottom lip and doesn’t always cry. In fact most of the time he doesn’t. This is not to say that he doesn’t cry, just that when he is shocked, crying is not his choice of reactions.

  39. rochelle s says:

Well darn how would you like to be in a nice warm place and then all of a sudden you are brought out into a cold bright place. Don’t think you would be to happy about it either.

  40. sweet thing says:

a baby might is use to the comfort of its mother stomach and you know that unfamiliar territories r not likely welcome so i think the baby cry because they are unfamiliar with the world.

  41. ME says:

I’m sure it has nothing to do with the baby thinking the world is an evil place or somthing. The sudden coldness and shock of a different place would make anyone cry. Baby or not.

  42. timetopopnow says:

My babies didn’t cry as soon as they were born… my last one looked at the light. But I assume discomfort is the reason.

  43. PRECIANA says:

BECAUSE THAT IS ALL HE KNOWS TO DO. SOMETIMES YOU ARE IN LABOR AN ENTIRE DAY. THE BABY IS USUALLY HUNGRY WHEN IT GETS HERE.
